SMB 2003 began as an adventurous plan to combine the Cape York Penisula, Torres Strait and the Red Centre of Australia.   Click here  [MAP]  to have a look at  our planned route.

We had some initial reservations about the viability of the trip due to distances and possible weather problems on the Cape but with some planning of dates around the best time of the year, and a huge bit of luck, the weather proved not to be much of a problem. We only had one day where weather played any part in changing the plans - and that was at Longreach in the outback where the weather has always been good to us before!

Thirteen intrepid airmen set off on the first leg to Horn Island in Torres Strait.  Peter and Bob had to deviate back to Cairns due to work commitments and Acko joined us in Karumba.

The rest of the tour went pretty much as hoped with the exception of  Longreach. The wind blew up and we were grounded on the day we had planned to leave. So we skipped the leg to Winton, had a lay-day  and then went straight from Longreach to Hughenden to Cairns on the last day.
