The original plan for 2005 was to do the middle section of the Northern Territory. In particular we wanted to go to places we hadn't been before. But when we looked at the maps and did an internet search there seemed limited things to see and do and long distances between them.
We then cast around for something in Queensland, with the same emphasis on places we hadn't been before. What we worked out was a tour of "one horse" towns. What we came up with was a tour through essentially the middle of Queensland in a long North-South arc. Although some of the towns had been stop-overs for fuel on past trips we tried to avoid staying in a place we had stayed before. The only one that ended up being a double up was Karumba.
A number of SMBers had also said they wanted to actually have time to look around the towns so we also decided to restrict the flying legs to essentially morning flying.
